Kamon Database – Nami

Figure: wave. 浪

Ancient people thought that the God of Water controlled the sea. They believed that raging waves were the Wrath of God. The Nami mon, as symbols of the God of Water, were perceived as very powerful, therefore many warriors fancied the wave insignias. A samurai named Saito Dosan was so inspired by waves that he decided to design a Nami mon just for himself. He eventually drew a very peculiar design called Nitō Nami, which is said to have been the very first wave insignia ever created.
